Judge Ramon Maestas was appointed to the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court in March 2025 by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham after being recommended by bi partisan Judicial Nominating Commission. He must now run in the 2026 election to keep his seat and to continue serving us.
Ramon serves in the Civil Division of Metro Court, which handles some of the busiest civil dockets in the state. Ramon has dedicated his career to public service and brings deep experience in both criminal and civil law. Before joining the bench, he served as Chief Clerk of the New Mexico Court of Appeals, Deputy General Counsel for the Second Judicial District Court, and a felony prosecutor at the Second Judicial District Attorney’s Office. He has also worked as a staff attorney and assistant general counsel for the City of New York, giving him a broad perspective on complex legal issues, including contracts, landlord-tenant disputes, criminal defense, and appellate practice.
Born and raised in Albuquerque’s South Valley, Ramon graduated from Rio Grande High School and went on to the University of New Mexico School of Law. Since then, he has built his career on public service and a commitment to fairness and efficiency in the Courts.

“As your judge, I am committed to ensuring that every person who comes before the court, whether represented by an attorney or appearing on their own, receives fair treatment and respect. Justice requires both compassion and order. I will always carefully consider all parties’ positions, apply the law impartially, and ensure cases move forward efficiently without unnecessary delay.” - Judge Ramon Maestas
Ramon understands firsthand the challenges faced by many in our community. Having grown up in Albuquerque and worked with diverse families in both civil and criminal cases, he knows how important it is that our courts remain accessible and fair. His decisions will always be free of outside influence and focused on maintaining public trust in our justice system.

Outside the courtroom, Ramon’s hobbies reflect the same balance and discipline he brings to the bench. A dedicated triathlete, he has competed in multiple races, including the Indian Wells 70.3 ironman.
He is also a lifelong reader, with a passion for literature first sparked by the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and J.K. Rowling and later expanded through an appreciation for graphic novels. He values the power of storytelling and enjoys conversations about literary works.
Born and raised in Albuquerque’s South Valley attending school at Los Padillas, Polk, and Rio Grande High, Ramon remains closely connected to the community that shaped him. These roots continue to guide his perspective, reminding him that every case brought before the court represents real people, families, and stories deserving of respect.

The Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court was created in 1980 to merge several courts into a single system. It handles misdemeanor criminal cases, domestic violence cases, DWI charges, and civil disputes up to $10,000. With 19 judges serving four year terms, the Metro Court is one of the busiest trial courts in the state.
Ramon serves in the Civil Division, where many individuals represent themselves because they cannot afford an attorney. He is dedicated to ensuring that these cases receive the same fair and consistent application of the law, as those represented by experienced counsel.

Ramon must now run in the 2026 election to keep his position and to continue working for us on the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court.
The primary election will be held on June 2, 2026, and the General Election on November 3, 2026. Voters in Bernalillo County can vote to keep Ramon working for our community.

We need your help! To appear on the 2026 election ballot, we need over 1,000 signatures from registered voters across Bernalillo County.
